SA Booksellers members Exclusive Books, Bargain Books and Wordsworth along with numerous independent stores around the country celebrated World Book Day (WBD) by having the official WBD childrens’ books available in store for only R15 during the month of April. Customers were encouraged to buy these books and donate them to Project Literacy’s Run Home to Read by putting them in the donation bins at the counter. The initiative, organised by the SA Booksellers Association, was in line with the £1 Book Token event hosted in the UK and Ireland where a £1 book token may be swapped for one of the official World Book Day books.
The campaign was well received by both booksellers and the public. Andrew Marjoribanks, Managing Director of Wordsworth described it as the most successful WBD promotion Wordsworth have ever participated in. “The posters were excellent and clear, the donation boxes looked good and the selection of books was outstanding. My only criticism is that the books would have sold better with a flash on the front cover with the price and logo of World Book Day. Customers snapped up the books and a big percentage was donated.”
Partnering with PanMacmillan, Christian Media Publishing, Jacklin Enterprises and NB Publishers, Van Schaik Bookstore’s aimed to make a difference on WBD by inviting learners from disadvantaged communities or with special needs around the country to participate in activities to embrace a love for books. Van Schaik’s aim is to introduce reading as fun and not a chore. They introduce learners to the wonderful world of books by utilising staff or special guests to read to them out of the most fascinating storybooks. Because reading stimulates creativity, National Geographic Kids, Freedom Stationery, Pilot, SMD Technology, Interstat, Bantex and Silveray agreed to sponsor these learners with stationery and magazines to help them with creative activities. In addition to special activities like book readings and lessons on the value of books, Van Schaik Bookstore launched a campaign to educate its customers about copyright infringement and plagiarism in April. “We want our customers to enjoy and value books but also to be cognisant of the impact of copyright infringement and plagiarism on authors and the future of the book,” says Stephan Erasmus, Managing Director of Van Schaik Bookstore.
